Max and Os

I found these obviously really old bad black and white negatives of Dad and Grandpa Eddy from my last visit ('76,'77?). I scanned, reversed and enlarged them. It was really strange to see the pictures pop out of these almost invisible negatives.

Pete Seeger Documentary

I just finished watching Pete Seeger: The Power of Song. It was a really nice documentary about his life and his influence. I didn't know that much about him so I really enjoyed seeing photos and hearing stories of him interacting with people like Paul Robeson, Woody Guthrie, Martin Luther King and his importance in the civil rights and anti-war movement. I knew the he was blacklisted, but didn't realize what affect that had on his career (he wasn't allowed on tv for 17 yrs until the Smothers Bros. declared they would have him on their show). The only problem with the film is that it was sort (1.5 hrs), so they didn't really have time to go into too much depth about any aspect of his life and there were definitely some topics I would have liked to hear more about.

Anyway, I think several people in the family would enjoy it, so I thought I should post about it.

On a side note, Bruce Springsteen mentions in the documentary how easy it is for the government to censor someone and how musicians are always endanger of that. At the beginning of a the documentary is preview for another film about the dixie chicks and how a statement they made against the iraq war tore them down at the height of their popularity. It was kind of a reality check to see this isn't just stuff that happened in the 50s, but it is still going on.

A Happy Guy

I ran across this picture of Dad the other day; it is my favorite one of his latter years. Coming back from the mailbox, he just seems so pleased--maybe because someone was taking his picture, or maybe in anticipation of sitting in his chair, lighting his pipe, and combing through the newspaper at his leisurely pace. It's nice to see him beaming. Does anyone know where this picture came from?

Best Father's Day Present Ever

This dark, grainy picture was taken by Susan with my crappy cell phone in an attempt to capture the flavor of my best Father's Day present ever--Phillip treated me to a Wilco concert on August 4 at White River Park in Indianapolis. You can sort of see the band in the red glow in back of us. It was a tad steamy, but a great, great concert. This disheveled father and son agree: Wilco is the best damn live band on the planet. McCain is not counting on the Eddys

Working with the Obama campaign I've discovered a great new site called fivethirtyeight.com. The author (Nate Silver) apparently developed industry-standard sports prediction techniques which he now applies to political analysis. I thought you might be interested in this post about John McCain taking Indiana for granted.

He apparently out-predicted the pollsters during the primaries, particularly in North Carolina and Indiana. Here is a piece in National Journal Online about that if you're interested.
