Steve's Radio Essay on the New St. Rd. 25
Here is the link to latest of Steve's radio essays. The rain-blurred photographs here were taken on the walk along the highway construction site that was the genesis of the essay. In the photo above Bonnie and Steve walk in the lead, Rob and Ian follow.
The picture above best captures the devastating transformation of the landscape; there were probably 40 of the earth movers shown here at the site. Thanks, Steve, for capturing our feelings about this development so precisely and eloquently.

Thanks for posting those pictures. They don't quite capture how cold and miserable it was that evening. They do, unfortunately, capture my bald spot in all of its glory--yet another devastated piece of terrain.
This is an excellent piece, Steve, although I don't for one minute believe you aren't a secret eco-terrorist. I wish everyone could see these pictures as they listen. It also adds another dimension if you've had dessert in Mike and Bonnie's kitchen.
Where we live there's almost no nature left to destroy, but they've recently mowed down the little patches of woods in our neighborhood and put in condos and wider roads. I've recently seen deer in my backyard and in my parents' backyard. It's exciting to see them, until you realize they're there just because they are running out of places to be.
I can neither confirm nor deny my status as an eco-terrorist in this public forum. We'll have to talk at Christmas in a more private setting. Many years ago, we had a deer sighting in our neighborhood. Ian thought it was a kangaroo, having only seen its head and neck above the top of a parked car.
