Music Problems!

I'm fed up musically. I have listened to everything I have 10,000 times exactly, and I can't take it anymore.
I trust the musical opinions of y'all more than anyone, so can anyone give me some recommendations?

I concur with Rob about the Schramm's, if you can find it.

You've heard of this band, Wilco, right? Well, Jeff Tweedy was in Uncle Tupelo before that and they're pretty interesting. His partner in that band , Jay Farrar, formed Son Volt and I've liked their stuff.

How about some songwriters a young English major might appreciate (from an old English major)? Of course the last Bob Dylan, "Love and Theft," was brilliant. Aimee Mann works a limited territory but writes very clever, cynical lyrics and has a sexy voice. Townes Van Zandt was the true poet of Texas songwriting scene (sorry Lyle)--look for "High, Low, and In Between." Pretty dark stuff. Magnetic Fields' "69 Love Songs" has some of the cleverest lyrics since Cole Porter. The youthful suicide Nick Drake is sort of a counterculture cliche, but he is really pretty great--"Pink Moon." And I think every young English major should own some Richard Thompson--brilliant songwriter, brilliant guitarist, pretty good singer. Smart, witty, amazing range. Two most recent are "Mock Tudor" and "The Old Kit Bag." By the way, having any of these albums in your car will identify you as a chick magnet. Be sure they can be seen by female passers-by.

Speaking of young suicides, Elliot Smith was so depressed he had albums where he couldn't even name songs, just numbered them. Wimpy voice, guitar tuned down so nothing sounds sunny, but great material. Pick up the album Either/Or. Do not mix with alcohol.

And a real musicologist can hear the Igor Stravinski influence in Zappa's "Brown Shoes Don't Make It" off of the album Absolutely Free. Impress chicks at parties with that! Er...just the reference--don't actually PLAY this song at parties with chicks.
