Update on Mom's Eye Problem

Rob took Mom to see her eye doctor, Dr. Mattingly, this morning. The hospital tests done yesterday have confirmed that infection is present (no surprise there). Mattingly said that her eye was unresponsive yesterday--did not react to light, did not follow movement. Today it was a bit better--responsive to light, following motion. Mom said he held up fingers and she could tell how many. No additional pus had accumulated. We're a long way from out of the woods though; this improvement could not hold up. Mattingly said it was in God's hands (not what you'd necessarily want to hear from your doctor); Mom told him she was determined to beat it and he said he believed her.

She's kept the patch on today because she finds the light a little distracting; Mattingly said it was alright. She's alternating over-the-counter pain medications, which procedure he also okayed. Church folks seem to be lining up to bring them dinners this week. Her spirits seemed pretty good tonight when I stopped after work. They were watching a video of yesterday's church service in which the minister apparently preached an anti-war sermon which she was eagerly awaiting.

She said she had trouble sleeping last night. Dad woke up at about 4 a.m. and she vented to him for several minutes and then was able to go right to sleep. I wonder if he did the same. One of her biggest concerns is not being able to drive, but people have been providing her with all kinds of examples of blind-in-one-eye drivers.

I take her to Dr. Scrhaut, the guy who worked on her yesterday, tomorrow. He's going to put some more antibiotics into the eye. We do that again on Thursday. I'll keep you updated.
