The Way West

Monday, 9/11.Sarah is in Corvallis--hooray! Leaving Seattle at 8:30 this morning she got a good dose of a real rush hour and said traffic was kind of heavy all the way down. She was in Corvallis by 2:30. She didn't have to work in the lab tonight but starts tomorrow night. She's staying with another grad student until her house is available--no hotel! She hopes to get with her landlady tomorrow to pay her deposit and find out what she can about the house. As you can probably tell, we're relieved to have her off the road, and I think she's pretty happy about being there as well.
Sunday, 9/10. Sarah spent the weekend in Seattle, dividing time between friends Brett and Justin and David Shilkany's family. She is leaving tomorrow for Corvallis. She starts work in the lab tomorrow evening, observing salamander mating procedures. (Apparently they have the good sense to know "the night-time is the right time.") She'll probably get a hotel room to get her through to Friday when her house presumably becomes available. Lots of things to take care of before classes start on Sept. 25--she isn't signed up for classes yet, she's a TA for Bio 211 but doesn't know what the course is, etc.
Thursday, 9/7. Sarah arrived in Seattle at about 9:15 tonight (6:15 their time), 803 miles from Billings. She reports that Montana is pretty, and North Dakota, Idaho, and eastern Washington are rather dull. The Cascades were nice however. She staying with Bonnie's brother David in Issaquah, an eastern suburb of Seattle's. She plans to do some sight-seeing with Brett tomorrow, though one of David's daughters wants to take her to school for show-and-tell. Her plans for the last leg (about 260 miles south) are a little up in the air; she needs to talk to some people in Corvallis. It sounds as if the house arrangement there is a done deal.

Wednesday, 9/6. Sarah has alighted in Billings, Montana for the night. She drove over 800 miles from Minneapolis to get there tonight. Tomorrow she drives a comparable distance to get to Seattle. She is caravanning with her high school/college friend Brett who is moving to Seattle.

She spent the Labor Day weekend at a cabin near Minneapolis enjoying a reunion with her college pals. She and Brett started out on Tuesday morning, but one of the springs in the front of her car snapped and had to be replaced. (Has anyone ever heard of this happening?) Hence the departure today.

By the way, it sounds as if her new roommate has located a house for them in Corvallis within walking distance of campus. They can't get in until Sept. 15 though.

I'll update this post over the next few days.
