Marcile in a Fender Bender

Mom was in a car accident yesterday (Tuesday, 9/20); she's fine, the other party seems okay, and the jury's out on the car. Several of you have received an e-mail from Rob on this already, but some of you haven't so I thought I'd go ahead and post some information about it so that Mom doesn't have to repeat the story a hundred times (which I think she will appreciate). This will be an unofficial account of the incident, subject to later change and correction by Herself.

Mom was proceeding south on North River Road (headed to the mall) and was trying to make a left onto the ramp that goes up to the Harrison bridge. Northbound traffic on the other side of the divided highway was heavy. A man in a pickup truck in the left northbound lane stopped before the intersection, waved to Mom to make her turn. As she was doing so, a third car in the right northbound lane came around the truck and stuck Mom's car on the passenger side. That spun her car around and put her into a grassy depressed area.

Her air bag deployed and she smelled something she thought was burning (turns out the airbags release a gas that has that sort of smell), so she got out of the car as quickly as she could. At least two cars stopped and people came down to help her, including a lady who kicked off her high heels so she could navigate the grass more quickly. The driver who'd waved her through the intersection came up and apologized and said he'd tired to wave her to stop when he became aware of the car passing him. Sue Eiler, who Mom had seen at Federated just before the accident, happened by and recognized Mom (by her clothes) as she was sitting on the curb. She stopped and helped Mom through the next hour or so. (Our family owes her a debt of gratitude; she was more than helpful--she really went the "extra mile.")

The EMTs on the scene asked Mom if she wanted to go to the emergency room; she didn't feel hurt but knew that if she didn't see a doctor she might have problems with any future medical claim. So she went to St. Elizabeth's in the same ambulance with the woman who was in the other vehicle. Sue Eiler called Rob who then called me, and Sue follwed Mom over to the hospital. When I arrived Sue was trying to get Mom checked in so they could start any needed treatment. She was great.

Most of what occurred in the emergency room was waiting--waiting to see a doctor and then waiting to be released. The exam showed Mom had an abrasion from the airbag that would probably result in some bruising. She was warned that she'd probably be stiff and sore today, but she doesn't seem to be. Obviously, problems could arise later.

Rob has rented Mom and Dad a Buick LaSabre to get around in (Mom likes it and threatens to keep it). She is staying home today and trying to work through the frustrations of entering an insurance claim. So today's a little hectic; if you have questions, please contact Mike or Rob for now.
